Movie Reviews: X-Men Dark Phoenix, Shazam, Alita: Battle Angel, Rocketman

Dark Phoenix: I liked this movie more than the masses did, apparently. Not that I thought it was a great movie, but it was better than the mess that was Apocalypse.

I think the biggest hate directed at this movie comes from the fact that this movie spits on any concept of fitting into the the other movies' timeline: it doesn't end in a way that fits in, and it takes place in the wrong decade. While I admit that it would have been better had it fit the timeline, I don't ding it any points for NOT doing so. I take the movie as it is, just like I don't care if it matches whatever is supposed to have happened in the comic books.

The story moves well enough: Jean Gray is a mutant with telekinesis, energy containment and blasts, and some mind reading. As a girl, she accidentally kills her parents. Charles Xavier takes her in and raises her in his school for gifted children. Some time later, on a rescue mission to save regular people in a space craft, she is exposed to and absorbs some kind of massive cloud of energy. She begins to lose control of her powers and some of her personality. During this process, she comes to find out that Charles "protected" her by lying to her about some things from her past and erecting some blocks on her power that were dangerous to her and others. Unbeknownst to her and everyone else, the energy she absorbed is some kind of power wanted by shape-shifting aliens who want to use it to destroy Earth. They try to win her over to their side and/or retake control of her power. Or something like that.

The movie is acted well and there is nothing wrong with the special effects, sound, or directing. One problem with the movie is that the aliens just kind of meander around; it's hard to figure out their exact powers or plan, they don't seem all that vicious (except for their ultimate goal), they don't exhibit any kind of emotion, and they are sometimes vulnerable to our heroes attacks and sometimes not without explanation as to why. So it's hard to relate to the struggle against them. Jean Gray doesn't emerge as much of a character, just someone who wanders around glassy eyed and generally upset. And Magneto is a shadow of his former self and not that interesting to watch. The others are not too bad.

The biggest problem is that the plot feels awfully like Captain Marvel's, which was a pretty terrific movie: a woman lied to by people who put blocks on her power, told to control her emotions, fighting shape shifting aliens. Captain Marvel manages to make the main character's smug constraints on her emotion seem human; she even smiles and laughs once in a while. This movie just isn't as good. It's also a reworking of the X-Men III: The Last Stand (from the previous timeline), which wasn't too bad of a movie either, although it suffered from some other, different, problems.

But at least this movie was watchable.

Shazam: Another DC movie, this one is pretty forgettable. A boy gets a suit that give him superpowers for reasons, and someone else want his power while others want to kill him, so there is fighting and a lot of young boys giggling. He is a foster kid who is sent from home to home, also for reasons, and ends up with a bunch of other foster kids in a home of an altruistic couple, and all of the other kids also join in the fun. The supernatural elements were ridiculous and even hokey. The whole plot was silly.

This movie is like if Spider-man happened, but instead of great action, a weighty sense of importance, great moral questions, excitement, tension, and good characters, a bunch of adolescent boys sat around and imagined how cool it would be to have a superpower. About the only good parts are the brief scenes of the boy's search for his mother and his mother's reaction to this.

Alita: Battle Angel: I gave this a shot, but it was only marginally better than Elysim, another story about people stuck on-world trying to get to the floating ship. Okay, Elysium was really bad, and this wasn't quite that bad, but it sure wasn't good.

You can kind of see through this animated movie how the comic source material (that I never heard of) could be pretty good. Flashes of some interesting world-building, characters, and plots hover around at the edges of the screen, but then they are gone, leaving us with a simple matter of roller skates, robot parts, races, a dull romance, silly action scenes, and nothing in the way of any characters that we care about. Highly unmemorable.

Rocketman: Taron Egerton inhabits adult Elton John in this biopic that will inevitably be compared to the recent Bohemian Rhapsody but is nothing like it, really. The latter is allegedly true, but mostly fiction, with weird changes to the true story that you wouldn't know were changes if you didn't know the actual history of Queen. It is also about Freddy Mercury's descent from drugs and promiscuity, but only mildly so; it is mostly about the music. Rocketman is a fantasy, but mostly true. It is a true musical with dramatic scenes or bridges breaking out into dance and song. The songs and drama are used to illustrate the character's feelings and experiences and the story is not about the music but about the descent, which is harsh and harrowing.

It is gripping and dazzling despite itself, much the way that Elton John was. Several songs are performed as showpieces, while others (mostly Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Rocket Man) run through the more poignant scenes in chords and snippets. Elton was tolerated but unloved by his mother and her family, and rejected altogether by his father, even as an adult. He had a lifelong friendship with Bernie Taupin, who accepted him as a homosexual but was not one  himself. Elton's descent includes pushing even Bernie away - temporarily - as depressed, drugged up, overly wealthy and indulged suicidal rock stars are likely to do. Except for the scenes with his parents, the story does not contain any real surprises, even for those who don't know anything about it, since it's pretty straightforward. But it is fun, or occasionally moving, to watch. And the music is great, even though it is all covers.

No Mr. Bond, I Expect You To Deck-Build...

Legendary: A James Bond Deck Building Game is more proof of how robust the Legendary game system is. Originally designed as a Marvel superhero game, Legendary has gone on to embrace franchises as diverse as Alien, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and even Big Trouble in Little China. Each new version has added something new to the game's simple deck building mechanics. For the most part these additions have integrated with the core game pretty seamlessly, while at the same time making each version of Legendary seem unique to its particular franchise. With its outlandish villains and often preposterous gadgets, the James Bond franchise isn't that far off from superhero adventure anyway, so it's definitely a good fit, requiring minimal changes to the game's structure.

New to the game the concept of Missions, a new card type that goes into the villain deck. While normal villains have to be defeated by playing cards with Attack value, missions work a little differently, offering alternative ways to defeat them such as using recruit points. Each mission set also includes an "inevitable mission" that starts the game on the bottom of the villain deck, acting as a timer to determine when the game ends and giving the last few turns a bit more excitement and drama.

The James Bond edition also brings a few new keywords and accompanying game mechanics to the game. Chase cards move more quickly through the play area, giving players less time to defeat them, and Squeeze, a keyword created specifically for Famke Janssen's absurdly over-the-top character from Goldeneye, reduces the number of cards available to recruit. Several cards taken from Casino Royale require the player to create a sort of poker hand using their cards' various symbols and values

The game play sticks to the core Legendary structure rather than the Encounters variant used by the majority of the non-Marvel versions, but it does group the encounter cards by film, with cards from Goldfinger, The Man With the Golden Gun, GoldenEye, and Casino Royale. This allows players to play out the events from these four films, but it also means that a ton of content from the other 20 films in the series (including Timothy Dalton's version of the title character, my personal favorite) is entirely missing. Hopefully expansions are coming.

This edition avoids the inconsistent artwork that is the Legendary series' only shortcoming by using stills from the movies, something they seem to be moving towards with their games licensed from film and TV properties. This makes for a better looking game, but also makes it a bit more jarring if you plan to try combining this set with any of the other Legendary games (which should otherwise be possible, at least theoretically).

Rating: 4 (out of 5) A solid entry in the Legendary series that stands on its own if you're just looking for a good James Bond game.

How To Paint Horses Using The Oil Paint Wipe Method

If you exclude "what are you doing in my back garden dressed as a chicken ?" one of the most common questions I get is how do you paint you horses. The other, how do you do your sea bases will be the subject of the Yarkshire TV treatment soon, however for now here is a video run through of painting horses in oils.

It's quite lengthy (45 mins plus) but I have covered everything, equipment, paints, techniques, figures etc so if you are interested in trying out the oil method give this video a go.

You can get through horses at a fair rate of knots too, any questions just ask.

Questions Answered

On the various formats this video has been posted on there have been a few common questions so to save me posting the same thing on different formats here they are,

How long is the drying time post wipe ?

The drying time post wipe is obviously variable around how much oil you use, room temperature etc but is considerably less than an unwiped figure.

I leave mine a minimum of a week before I start using acrylics for reins, saddle, white markings etc. I would give it a couple of days minimum in a warm room.

The problem area will often be the recesses around the harness as this is where the deepest amount of oil paint sits. If your unsure try a test patch.

It's never a problem for me, the big selling point of this method is speed of painting so I paint in batches of 50 to 100 horses so they sit around sometimes for over a year to be painted.

What are the best colour combinations ?

The first thing I would say on this is that another of the strong points of this method for me is the hundreds of different combinations of colours and the subtle effects you can achieve, even using the same oil colour but with a different consistency will give a different effect so it's very hard to quantify. My top tip is to find stuff out by trial and error.

Golden Rule number one is that the oil paint must be darker than the acrylic base otherwise their will be no contrast

If you want a colour combination to try as a test I would use a Vallejo 70856 Ochre Brown base with a Brown Madder (or Burnt Umber) oil layer.

The darkest oil paint is Vandyke Brown which is almost black. This works best with the dark base coats so try 70814 Burnt Cadmium Red as a base. Others to try are darker browns like 312 (Panzer Aces) Leather Belt, 70983 Flat Earth, 70921 English Uniform, 70879 Green Brown.

Going lighter next up would be Burnt Umber, this is a very dark but slightly redder colour than Vandyke Brown. It works best with dark ochre type colours so Ochre Brown, 70914 Green Ochre 70825 German Pale Brown are good.

In between Burnt Umber and the next colour is Raw Umber, this is a very earthy brown and doesn't have the sheen of other colours, I use it sparingly over German Pale Brown and 70874 USA Tan Earth.

Next lighter are Brown Madder and Brown Transparent Oxide, I have put these two together as they are very similar but give a subtle difference in effect, the transparent oxide being, well more transparent. These are the most versatile colours and work well with the Burnt Umber colours. Go to is Ochre Brown as mentioned above. Also good are 70977 Desert Yellow, 70912 Tan Yellow, 70913 Yellow Ochre.

Finally the lightest Oils Burnt Sienna and Brown Ochre, these only work with quite lighter colours and I sometimes mix a bit of Burnt Umber in to darken them up. Go with Desert Yellow, Tan Yellow, 70847 Dark Sand, Yellow Ochre, 70976 Buff.

Hope that sends you in the right direction. I encourage experimenting with the colours, try some of the light bases like Dark Sand with Brown Madder for example and see if you like it. So long as the oil paint is darker than than the base it will work, you will find the best combinations for your taste.

What consistency of oil paint should I use ?

Paint straight from the tube is too thick, get some distilled turpentine like in the video, put a small amount of oil paint on a none absorbent surface (size of your little finger nail) add a touch of turps to the brush, pick up some oil paint on the brush and mix them together on the surface.

You are looking for a consistency off oil, thin enough to flow easily over the horse and get into all the recesses but thick enough to give a full colour coverage.

How To Start | How To Become An Ethical Hacker

Are you tired of reading endless news stories about ethical hacking and not really knowing what that means? Let's change that!
This Post is for the people that:

  • Have No Experience With Cybersecurity (Ethical Hacking)
  • Have Limited Experience.
  • Those That Just Can't Get A Break

OK, let's dive into the post and suggest some ways that you can get ahead in Cybersecurity.
I receive many messages on how to become a hacker. "I'm a beginner in hacking, how should I start?" or "I want to be able to hack my friend's Facebook account" are some of the more frequent queries. Hacking is a skill. And you must remember that if you want to learn hacking solely for the fun of hacking into your friend's Facebook account or email, things will not work out for you. You should decide to learn hacking because of your fascination for technology and your desire to be an expert in computer systems. Its time to change the color of your hat 😀

I've had my good share of Hats. Black, white or sometimes a blackish shade of grey. The darker it gets, the more fun you have.

If you have no experience don't worry. We ALL had to start somewhere, and we ALL needed help to get where we are today. No one is an island and no one is born with all the necessary skills. Period.OK, so you have zero experience and limited skills…my advice in this instance is that you teach yourself some absolute fundamentals.
Let's get this party started.
  •  What is hacking?
Hacking is identifying weakness and vulnerabilities of some system and gaining access with it.
Hacker gets unauthorized access by targeting system while ethical hacker have an official permission in a lawful and legitimate manner to assess the security posture of a target system(s)

There's some types of hackers, a bit of "terminology".
White hat — ethical hacker.
Black hat — classical hacker, get unauthorized access.
Grey hat — person who gets unauthorized access but reveals the weaknesses to the company.
Script kiddie — person with no technical skills just used pre-made tools.
Hacktivist — person who hacks for some idea and leaves some messages. For example strike against copyright.
  •  Skills required to become ethical hacker.
  1. Curosity anf exploration
  2. Operating System
  3. Fundamentals of Networking
